This is a review for Pickup Music.
I am taking a break from developing games (or anything programming related) for now. I have been playing guitar for over ten years and decided to look more into music theory.
This was difficult to do from where I was. I didn’t need beginner basics, but I also wasn’t ready for advanced theory yet. Videos on YouTube sometimes helped.
Overall, I strongly recommend Pickup Music. I highly advise you to go through the CAGED lessons during your free trial if you are in a similar boat. Their music theory course is essential and has been very helpful. The $30/mo asking price is great for the wealth of knowledge available here.
Courses I have currently completed:
- CAGED 1
- Intermediate
- Late Intermediate
- Metal
I am currently in the middle of:
- Music Theory
- Soloing
So, I have good experience with the platform as a whole.
There are some problems.
First, from the two questions I asked, the support team was mediocre. They only answered part of my question, and each answer felt a bit dismissive.
Second, their video player isn’t great (tested on Firefox and Chromium on Linux):
- The controls seem to constantly change on me. Half of the time, the
Space
key sets the video fullscreen, other times it pauses the video. TheF
key sometimes sets the video fullscreen. - The tab section of some videos doesn’t seem to work the best. Maybe the timing is off or the bars are wrong…but it jumps ahead rather quickly and is unreliable.
Third, the website works very poorly on mobile (iOS and Android). Videos don’t want to go fullscreen for me in Safari (iOS) or Firefox (Android). They have an iOS app, but not an Android app…
Basically, if you only have an Android device and no laptop or desktop, you might have a bad time. Otherwise, go for it. I have learned so much within such a short period of time. I’m able to express myself more fluently on guitar now, and that feels fantastic.
P.S. I have been making some small improv videos on Instagram if you’d like to check them out!
